QandA with Emerald Podiatrist Sikhie
The transcript of our sit down is below.
So Sikhie, a question that podiatrists get asked all the time, why feet?
I feel with podiatry I get to help a variety of people and help save feet both young and not so young.
What we do in Podiatry is pretty diverse. We see sports related injuries, high risk wound management and kids of all ages. So you never really know what will walk through the door and that keeps me on my toes. Which I guess for me is what I think life is all about!
At Pride in Emerald we see many of our clients from diverse population groups, with many different problems. How do you personalise your service?
It’s all about asking questions and figuring out my clients goals are. What do they want to get back into or start doing?
It’s only then I can tailor our management plan and optimise it so we can reach our goals together. My clients are just as much a part of the solution as I am.
Let’s talk injuries. Is there anything that we can do as sub-elite and weekend warrior level sportswomen and men to help reduce our own injury risks?
Well it all starts from knowing our anatomy and learning how our anatomy works for us!
Another component to preventing injury is resistance training as this helps us to build our tissue capacity so our muscles, tendons and ligament can take more of a beating without wanting to pull the plug.
Lastly I think if we all listened to our bodies to know when we are doing too much… Well, we can stop ourselves before the point of no return.
And at the risk of alienating the majority of our audience, favourite team(s)?
Geelong Cats (Tim – yes! Go Cats)
Favourite book?
Not going to lie, I haven’t read a book in a while – it’s something I need to get back into.
Favourite movie?
Anything related to Christopher Nolan, he is a great director.
And now for some podiatrist advice please Sikhie. Like many of us in our 30’s I wake up with some tightness in my calves in the morning. Any tips?
Let’s start by introducing you to some single leg calf raises to build up your tissue capacity.
Since calf tightness is mostly associated with overuse or overloading of the calves. Let’s get some of that strength back into them. Good technique is vital to any exercise, so focus on exploding up… holding the position for 3 seconds and coming down slowly for 3 seconds.
Oh, and make sure you’re keeping your weight towards the middle of your feet!
Thanks Sikhie, anything else to add?
I’m super keen to work with everyone up here in Emerald achieve their goals.
