EP. Exercise Physiology.
Let’s find out about the greatest (so we’re biased here) profession making strides improving people’s lives by reducing pain, improving mood, improving confidence, reducing the burden of chronic disease and making those special connections between health and well being every single day.
In Pascoe Vale our EP Mike Fitzsimon is a trailblazer, having been a registered EP for 13 years. Mike’s journey to becoming an EP is an amazing story for another time, the cliff-notes include time working as a personal trainer in 3 different countries, running his own private gym and how he loves working with those of us managing chronic disease. Mike’s experience providing services to his beloved clients is unparalleled and we are incredibly lucky to have these available to us within the Pascoe Vale community.
As an Exercise Physiologist Mike is the expert on how the human body functions and responds to physical activity or inactivity. An EP like Mike knows how picking up a weight 10 times will lead to different effects on muscle, tendon, bone and the mind compared with walking 10 minutes or swimming 10 laps. These effects vary person to person, even hour to hour. Our own personal needs to improve our fitness, reduce our pain, improve our blood pressure or bone density change as well so there’s no one size fits all for physical activity.
Exercise Physiology is for you if you
- Have anxiety or depression
- Are looking to reduce pain, particularly stubborn chronic pain
- Want to improve your health and fitness
- Need to improve your muscle, bone or tendon strength
- Have to reduce your high blood pressure, high cholesterol or high blood sugars
- Are preparing to undergo surgery
- Are undergoing chemotherapy and looking to reduce side effects
- Have a medical condition
EP’s like Mike in Pascoe Vale are absolute experts on all aspects of health and disease as well as the varieties of exercise and physical fitness out there.
But that’s not even the half of it!
Mike also has to communicate and engage with his clients whether that be you, your mother, father, sister, brother, son or daughter, nanna or neighbour. Now I don’t know about your family but how I communicate with everyone from that list is different to the next and I have had the benefit of countless family dinners, events and chats over the back fence to build that rapport and understanding of how to get a message across.
Mike’s experiences with clients from all walks of life and with a variety of goals in mind allows him to seamlessly and immediately build connections and translate what could be tricky physiological concepts such as sarcomerogensis (the way our muscles get longer and stronger when worked under load through movements) or how certain movements have positive effects on our mood.
